AMERICANISM

In addition to the Voice of Democracy, Patriot's Pen, and Teacher of the Year programs Derry Memorial VFW Post 1617 provides programs and services to the community and local schools. One service is a living history with Veterans in the Classroom where they can provide a rare glimpse on a topic or their service.

Members of the Post, all of whom have served their nation in combat operations overseas, are able to visit schools to present programs such as:
  • The meaning of Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and similar events.
  • History of the U.S. Flag
  • Flag Etiquette and Folding

We provide Americanism and Citizenship activity sheets to local schools for free for the students to learn with along with volunteers of the Post showing students flag etiquette and folding.

We also recognize JROTC and Naval Sea Cadets annually for their contributions to the units with citations and medals.

The Post will also assist schools in presenting student awards which are related to academic achievements as an honor student and related to good citizenship.

For additional information, and to arrange for a Veterans in the Classroom or Flag Etiquette and folding/Citizenship Education presentation, contact the Post Adjutant: VFW Post 1617
